No longer a luxury, broadband is the fundamental building block of our digital economy; and yet over 50M Americans, disproportionately from low-income and minority communities, have been priced out and cut off from the most important communications platform and economic engine of our time. EveryoneOn is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to provide affordable access to high-speed internet, devices, and digital literacy skills training to millions of low-income families who still cannot afford the most basic technology required to succeed and thrive in today’s digital economy.  

Through cross-sector partnerships with the nation’s leading internet, device, and content providers, we facilitate access to affordable technology with immediate scale. Today, more than 36 million people across 48 states are qualified and in-coverage for $10 per month internet services and ~$150 tablets and laptops, provided through EveryoneOn. We have helped connect more than 700,000 people to affordable internet service.

In 2019, we are deepening our impact within communities by offering training and programming in addition to connectivity. We are launching a number of projects where we provide technology (computers and internet access) in addition to training around digital literacy, workforce readiness, hardware and software development, and other topics.

Role Overview

The Director of Operations will lead all operational functions including finance, human resources, technology tools, vendor management, and performance measurement. We operate as a small, agile team, and this role will represent all aspects of operations at both a project level and an organizational level. In doing so, the Director of Operations will ensure we deliver on our commitments, while staying within budget and in compliance with internal and external requirements.

This position will report to the Chief Executive Officer. This role does not have any direct reports.

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about helping organizations run effectively and efficiently. Our idea candidate is very comfortable working with data, finances, and technology, but also able to lead these functions within a highly collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

Finance and Accounting

  • Process all financial transactions for the organization for both income (receiving and accounting for checks) and expenses (paying and accounting for bills)

  • Create reports showing financial status and projections for individual projects and the overall organization

  • Conduct month-end and year-end accounting processes (reconciliations, statement filing, etc.)

  • Maintain the accounting system, by suggesting and making occasional improvements as needed

  • Work with accounting partner to file the organization’s Form 990

  • Work with accounting partner to conduct annual audit

Human Resources

  • Run and account for payroll (including 401(k) deposits)

  • Coordinate annual open enrollment with health benefits providers and staff

  • Assist staff with HR needs (e.g., paid leave requests, understanding of benefits)

  • Onboard new hires and offboard staff as they leave the organization

  • Maintain organizational policies and procedures

Vendor Management

  • Assist with drafting partnership agreements (in consultation with partners and EveryoneOn legal team)

  • Ensure compliance with partner requirements for our operations (e.g. insurance, safeguards)

  • Register and maintain EveryoneOn account in partner portals and online systems

Performance Measurement

  • Track the organization’s progress against its mission, including new internet connections (adoptions), devices distributed, training sessions, and other outcomes facilitated by EveryoneOn

  • Maintain tools that help measure website activity and share findings with staff

Technology and Tools

  • Make improvements to EveryoneOn’s tools, including our organizational websites and databases

  • Identify and vet software platforms and tools to assist with collaboration (primarily internal, but may be partner-facing as well)

  • Manage occasional outsourced software projects (for example, to make a revision to our current software)


  • Provide support to fundraising staff with creation of cost estimates for new grants, and financial reports for existing grants

  • Track organizational assets: computers, physical property, software and accounts

  • Maintain internal tools, including our project management platform and shared drive

  • Maintain organizational status and registration with jurisdictions where we operate

  • Interface with and present to board members on the financial health of the organization


The preferred location for this role is the Greater Washington DC area, but other locations will be considered. The Director of Operations will be a remote, work-from-home position, with occasional (infrequent) travel to meetings in DC.

Qualifications & Skills

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Experience managing finance and operations in a small- or mid-size organization or department, ideally within a nonprofit organization

  • Knowledge of accounting and accounting software (especially QuickBooks Online)

  • Strong financial modeling skills, experience with quantitative analysis, and proficiency with spreadsheets (Excel, Google Sheets)

  • Very strong team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to manage many concurrent work streams across different areas of the organization

  • Ability and interest in creating process and structure, as needed

  • A passion for closing the digital divide in America

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree

  • Experience with creating and managing contracts (especially government contracting experience)

  • Experience with managing technology projects, executing either directly or through outsourced partners (especially software development experience)

  • Hands-on leadership in an entrepreneurial company or social venture
